	The Rotary Club of Toronto is in its fifty third year of serving the community. Over this time the Club has earned a proud reputation for community service.. Over those fifty three years, the relevance of service work has changed, along with community aspirations and needs. While the Club has continued several avenues of traditional service, members have always been prepared to consider new and challenging service ideas. These have included supporting breast cancer research, working in partnership with Landcare groups, graffiti removal, overseas aid and vocational support for young people, to name a few.
	Since 2008, the Club has committed itself to supporting effective parenting. Parenting is one of the more challenging tasks that confront families in the twenty first century. There is no official training to be a parent. One day you are given the responsibility after the miracle of birth, and then you set out, often alone, on a long and sometimes arduous. journey. There may be some advice from the immediate family, either welcome or unwelcome. Many parents depend on the methods and strategies that were used by their own parents. These strategies were often well meaning, but the passing of time has often rendered these ineffective in today's challenging times.
	Governments of all persuasions have sometimes tried to enter the area of parenting, but nothing of substance has as yet emerged. Governmental initiatives have suggested that assistance should be available for "bad" parents. The Rotary Club of Toronto is not judgemental, and believes that all parents need guidance and assistance at some time. All parents endure doubt, frustration and uncertainty at varying stages of the parenting journey and there is a real need for support and advice. The Rotary Club hopes that this website, "Effective Parenting 21", will form part of a support structure that will help the parents of the twenty first century. It is a new and exciting form of community service. The Club hopes that this type of service will extend out of Toronto and environs and into other Rotary Districts, both in Australia and internationally.
